WE'VE HAD A SNOW ANGEL PROGRAM FOR 30 YEARS OF SENIOR CITIZENS OR DISABLED RESIDENTS CAN'T SHOVEL THEIR DRIVEWAYS WHEN IT SNOWS. WE HAVE VOLUNTEER SNOW ANGELS THAT DO IT FOR THEM AT NO COST. UM, WE HAVE A TV ANGELS PROGRAM. IF A RESIDENT CAN'T DISPOSE OF THEIR TV VOLUNTEERS PICK THEM UP. AND AFTER HURRICANES AND POWER OUTAGES, WE'VE ALWAYS HAD A LOT OF RESIDENTS WHO VOLUNTEER THEIR HOMES, UM, PROVIDING THOSE WITHOUT POWER, WITH TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATIONS AT NO COST. WE'VE EVEN HAD POLICE OVER THE YEARS DROP OFF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS TO SENIORS DURING, UM, EMERGENCIES AND HAVE A FANTASTIC GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS, WHETHER THEY'RE ON ADVISORY BOARDS, THE AMBULANCE, UM, FOR, UH, MEMBERS, FIREFIGHTERS, YOU KNOW, WE REALLY ARE, THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING HARD TO HELP THEIR NEIGHBORS IN DISTRESS. THE LACK OF A VACCINE FOR MANY PEOPLE IS EXTREMELY STRESSFUL BECAUSE THE VACCINE REPRESENTS LIFE TO PEOPLE. THE LACK OF A VACCINE REPRESENTS POTENTIAL DEATH, FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES, WHICH CREATES A VERY, VERY SCARY FEELING. AND DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS, MANY RESIDENTS HAVE CONTACTED ME WITH EXTREMELY SERIOUS OUR STORIES. THEY WANT THE VACCINE, AND THEY'RE VERY, VERY PANICKY. THEY'VE BEEN TRYING HARD TO GET THE VACCINE WITHOUT SUCCESS. I SPOKE TO, UM, A WOMAN, UM, UH, TODAY, STAGE FOUR, CANCER. CAN'T GET THE VACCINE. I'VE SPOKEN TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE PARKINSON'S, CAN'T GET THE VACCINE. I'VE SPOKEN TO, UM, RESIDENTS WHO HAVE LUNG ILLNESSES. THEY CANNOT GET THAT, THE VACCINE. AND, UH, JUST A FEW HOURS AGO, A WOMAN CALLED ME, UM, SHE DEPENDS ON OXYGEN TO SURVIVE, AND SHE NEEDS A VACCINE. AND, YOU KNOW, SHE KEEPS GOING ON. THEY KEEP GOING ON THE COMPUTER. AND WHAT HAPPENS, UM, MANY TIMES A COMPUTER CRASHES. SO THE CURRENT REGISTRATION PROCESS IS EXTREMELY CONFUSING. YOU KNOW, I FEEL YOU HAVE TO BE, UM, A DOCTOR THE MORE THAN A PHD, SOME, SOMETIMES TO FIGURE THIS OUT. PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO REGISTER ONLINE, MAKE APPOINTMENTS. THEY CAN'T GET THROUGH TO THE STATE, WHICH SET UP A PHONE SYSTEM. THERE'S NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE ANSWERING PHONES. THEY TRY TO REGISTER. THEY THINK THEY'LL GET AN APPOINTMENT, AND THE COMPUTER CRASHES. THEY'RE TOLD THAT THEY CAN GET A VACCINE. UM, FOR EXAMPLE, PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY COULD GET A VACCINE AT RITE AID. UM, SO SOME PEOPLE WERE, UH, DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR THE COUNTY CENTER BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO GO TO RITE AID. BUT NOW, TODAY, RITE AID IS NOT LISTED AS, AS A SITE OR THE PAST FEW DAYS, RITE AID HAD NO VACCINES. UM, THERE'S PEOPLE WHO HAVE CALLED ME WITH COMPROMISED IMMUNE SYSTEMS, UM, AND THEY WERE TOLD THAT THEY COULD REGISTER FOR A VACCINE, BUT WHEN THEY GET TO THE COMPUTER, THE COMPUTER WON'T ALLOW THEM TO REGISTER. SO THE GOAL OF TONIGHT'S MEETING, WHICH WILL LAST LESS THAN AN HOUR, IS TO BEGIN AN AMBITIOUS EFFORT TO CONTACT SENIORS IN THE TOWN. WE REALLY DON'T WANT SENIORS TO GIVE UP. WE WANT THEM TO REGISTER. AND IF THEY CAN'T DO IT THEMSELVES, WE WANNA HELP THEM REGISTER THEMSELVES. WE WANT TO HELP THEM SIGN UP. UH, WE WANT TO ASSIST THEM WITH, UH, TRANSPORTATION TO REALLY DO ANYTHING, UM, YOU KNOW, POSSIBLE TO HELP THEM. BECAUSE MY FEAR IS, IF YOU HAVE A CUMBERSOME, DIFFICULT PROCESS, PEOPLE WILL GIVE UP. OF COURSE, THIS APPLIES TO THOSE WHO ARE IMMUNOCOMPROMISED, BUT OUR, OUR FIRST GOAL IS TO HELP OUR SENIORS WHO ARE NOT ABLE TO NEGOTIATE THIS PROCESS ON THEIR OWN. UH, YOU KNOW, WHEN THE ELIGIBILITY WAS JUST OVER 75, IT WASN'T AS BAD, BUT ONCE THEY ANNOUNCED THAT OVER 65 WAS ELIGIBLE, ALL THE SLOTS JUST DISAPPEAR. SO THAT'S WHERE WE STAND RIGHT NOW, AND WE REALLY DON'T WANNA CALL AND GIVE PEOPLE THE EXPECTATION THAT WE CAN GIVE THEM, GET AN APPOINTMENT FOR THEM IF THE APPOINTMENT'S NOT THERE. IT TOOK ME ABOUT 12 CALLS TO GET THROUGH, AND THEN TWO AND A HALF HOURS TO WAIT WOW. TO GET SOMEBODY. BUT I'M ACTUALLY GOING ON SUNDAY. THEY GOT ME AT WESTCHESTER COUNTY, SENT AT FOUR O'CLOCK. AND I SAID, AND I SAID, WHY, WHY IS THIS NOT ON THE WEBSITE? WHY IS IT, WHY IS WEBSITE GOING TO APRIL WHEN I GOT IT? AND THEY SAID THAT THEY, THEY HAVE AVAILABILITY THAT'S NOT ON THE WEBSITE. SO I THINK IF I GET PEOPLE'S NUMBERS, I'D RATHER I HAVE THE PATIENCE TO JUST SIT AND DIAL AND LISTEN TO MUSIC. MAYBE I'LL GET IT DONE THAT WAY. SO I'M SORT OF WONDERING IF SOME OF THE VOLUNTEER, INSTEAD OF, UM, SAYING, OH, YOU'RE NOT GONNA GET ANYTHING BECAUSE PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, I'M GETTING, LIKE TODAY I GOT A WHOLE BUNCH OF, UM, CALLS FROM PEOPLE SAYING THEY DID GET APPOINTMENTS. SO EVERYBODY WHO GETS AN INJECTION TODAY IS, IS GOING TO AUTOMATICALLY GET THOSE SLOTS THREE TO FOUR WEEKS FROM NOW SO THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO GO IN TO GET THEIR FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENT. SO IT'S REALLY A COMPLICATED SYSTEM, AND, UH, THOSE WHO DON'T MIND TRYING TO GET THROUGH AT THIS POINT, THAT'S GREAT. WE CAN GO AHEAD AND DO THAT. THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO WAIT UNTIL WE KNOW THAT SLOTS ARE AVAILABLE, THAT'S FINE. WE CAN WORK WITH YOU TO DO IT THAT WAY ALSO.
