MOMENT OF SILENCE

In memory of Sy (Seymour) Scharf who loved life.  He was a great Rotarian who served as President of the Hartsdale Club and was a long time member of the expanded Hartsdale/Greenburgh Rotary Club.  Sy loved to present the Student of the Month Awards to students from the Bailey School and Woodlands Middle School that were selected by their teachers for their achievements.  He was a philanthropist, benefactor and just fun to be around. He cherished his family and his religion and was active in the Temples he attended.  Sy was honored by Westchester County when he was named Man of the Year at the Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. Sy loved to make sure that everyone knew his age.  He left us just shy of his 100th birthday.  We will miss you Sy!

In memory of John Shearer, a true Renaissance man, fashioned in the mold of Gordon Parks.  Like Parks, Shearer has been a photographer, writer, director, lecturer and professor.  At 17 years of age, Shearer was one of the youngest photographers ever hired by a major publication when LOOK magazine hired him in 1966, and afterwards he worked for LIFE magazine.  Shearer covered both civil rights and race riots in the 60’s, the Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier Fight, and the Attica Prison riots in 1972.  John Shearer has won 175 national photography awards.  His work was on exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum
