MOMENT OF SILENCE

In memory of Ralph Goldsmith of Irvington, an American hero, who passed away peacefully on October 11, 2019 at the age of 96. Ralph was born to Henrietta and Leopold Goldsmith and lived his entire youth in New York City.  At 19, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Ralph was the 3rd man to put boots on the ground on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.  He fought valiantly in World War II as a part of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry’s invasion on Omaha Beach where he earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for Bravery.   He was deployed to France and Belgium and later returned to the U.S. from the European Theater of Operations to marry his teenage sweetheart Ruth Weingarten.
Through his 96th birthday, Ralph’s sharpness, wit, good nature, big heart and toughness were always on display.  With Ruth, his companion for 80 years, he became a beloved figure in restaurants, diners and streets of the Rivertowns for nearly 28 years. He will be deeply missed by all he encountered, but most of all by the loving family he left behind.  Ralph has sown deep roots in the Rivertowns watching his 4 grandchildren graduate from the Irvington schools and his 6 great grandchildren enter the Irvington and Tarrytown schools.
His story (videotaped in 3 parts) of his experiences on Omaha Beach is archived at the Library of Congress and can be accessed on the Internet.
