HOWEVER, PERSONAL ATTACKS, OF ANY KIND, TOWARD ANYONE, WILL NOT BE PERMITTED

The Greenburgh Town Board appreciates comments from residents at its open meetings.  Recently, comments have been made that, whether intended or not, were hurtful to other members of the public because the comment perpetuated racial or religious tropes and stereotypes.  We believe it is appropriate to remind everyone that bigotry and hate have no place in Greenburgh.  As we move forward we will work together to educate each other around this issue.  Our goal is to maintain a robust and constructive dialogue.  We are confident that this Town can continue to have these dialogues.

MOMENT OF SILENCE

In memory of the 865,155+ individual victims of COVID-19 who have died in the United States, 5,570,163+ deaths worldwide, each leaving family members and friends too soon

In memory of the Honorable Reginald A. LaFayette, a longtime leader in the civic life of Westchester County.  Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Reggie, as he was known to his countless friends, moved to Mount Vernon in 1972.  His involvement in the community began that year when he became a Democratic District Leader, a position he continuously held until his passing.  Reggie served in numerous other roles in local and county government, starting his career in Mount Vernon City Hall, serving as a Deputy Comptroller and City Clerk, before assuming the role as Board of Elections Democratic Commissioner for Westchester County.  He swiftly moved up in the ranks politically, becoming the Chair of the Mount Vernon Democratic City Committee, a Democratic State Committee member representing the 89th Assembly District, and the Westchester County Democratic Committee Chairman, a post he held for 16 years. His commitment to the advancement of women and people of color in all levels of government is clearly evident in Westchester County and the State of New York.  While we mourn his passing, he leaves us with his legacy of effective leadership and fond memories.  Friend, mentor and colleague, Reggie's contributions have shaped and improved our community in ways that could never be measured.

In memory of Greenburgh resident André Leon Talley who was an American fashion journalist, stylist, creative director, and editor-at-large of Vogue magazine.  He was the magazine's fashion news director from 1983 to 1987, its first African-American male creative director from 1988 to 1995, and then its editor-at-large from 1998 to 2013.  Through his many high profile and influential roles in the world of fashion, here in New York and globally, he broke the “glass ceiling” of access and opportunity for hundreds of African Americans who, as a result of his support, were able to impact this arena of glamour and exclusivity.  Andre, who “…who went from the Jim Crow South to the front rows of Paris couture, was a resident of the Town of Greenburgh and, at the invitation of Town Clerk, Judith A. Beville, was a guest lecturer to students in the Greenburgh Town Hall Summer Internship Program.
